I finally just did it and i found “Farmhouse on Boone” where Lisa did the best job of instructing and demonstrating for me how to make a sourdough starter from scratch. I have wanted to do it for years. It is so much better for you. There are great health benefits from sourdough.
You need:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- Use a glass or plastic bowl and a wooden spoon. (not metal)
Instructions
- Day 1 combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup water, cover with a towel and let sit for 24 hours.
- Day 2 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 1 time/day
- Days 3 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 1 time/day
- Days 4 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 1 time/day
- Days 5 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 1 time/day
- Day 6 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 2 times a day
- Day 7 discard 1/2 the starter and add 1 cup flour and 1 cup water 2 times a day
After the first week you can start using the starter to make things. There are lots of things to make with the discard. If you use the starter a few times a week then you discard and feed the starter every day and keep it on the counter. If you don’t use it that much then keep it in the fridge and take it out and discard and feed it once a week or so.
